The Hong Kong Government is actively enhancing recycling infrastructure, with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) installing Smart Food Waste Bins across public housing estates to help residents develop recycling habits. However, for long-term change, education and community engagement remain indispensable.
From 2024 to 2025, New Life Cycle implemented the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) Smart Food Waste Recycling Education Scheme in Public Housing Estate (PRH) Estates across 23 estates in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, and Sham Shui Po. This community-based initiative complemented the EPD’s Trial Scheme on Food Waste Collection in PRH by deepening residents' understanding and fostering long-term, correct recycling habits.
Aligned with the EPD’s food waste management strategy, the program encouraged the spirit of mutual aid among neighbors. Through targeted and engaging activities, we educated residents on the proper use of smart bins, significantly boosting participation and equipment utilization rates.
Program Highlights:
85 Food Waste Education Team Members recruited: Received professional training to promote accurate recycling knowledge within the community.
276 sessions of Educational Stations: Guided residents through the recycling process, effectively increasing participation.
Community Engagement Activities: Initiatives like "Food Waste Quiz Games" and "Zero Food Waste – Surplus Food Exchange" promoted a "Food Wise" culture in a fun and interactive way.
Recycling Competitions: The "Smart Recycling Habit Competition" held across three districts attracted over 1,000 winning residents.
O·PARK1 Guided Tours: Organized 5 guided tours to let residents witness the transformation of food waste into energy firsthand.
Through the program’s momentum, an increasing number of residents have established consistent recycling habits, bringing positive and lasting change to the community.
